Survived by Children, Nancy (Wallace McLendon), Dennis (Janice), Eileen (George Johnson), Stuart (Judy), Sandra (Jeff Clow) & Carrie (Joseph Whitt); 15 Grandchildren, 11 Great-Grandchildren & 1 Great-Great-Granddaughter.
As a teenager, Gene spent considerable time at his family farm near Moose Lake where he met Carol, his wife of 60 years. He actually rode his bike back & forth and hitch hiked to see her. He served in the Air Force and then he & Carol settled in Maplewood where they raised 6 children. For many years Gene worked full time & attended night school to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He had a long career at Honeywell, retiring in 1989 and then Gene & Carol enjoyed 20 years of full time RV travel. In 2009, they returned to St. Paul.
Gene was an active member of Presentation of Mary church where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. He had a profound love of the Lord, living life to the fullest. Gene also served over 20 years on the Maplewood police force.
He enjoyed experiencing life, helping his children appreciate life & each other, as well as teaching them the love of outdoors, gardening, camping, hunting & shopping for deals. He took his grandchildren, nieces & nephews searching for the best gas price, sometimes all afternoon. And of course there were mystery meals because he liked the challenge of buying cans of foods without labels.
Family & friends are gathering at the church one hour prior to Mass to remember his life. His Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 1725 Kennard, in Maplewood. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Little Canada.
The family thanks Cerenity Humboldt Care Center of St. Paul for the wonderful care that Gene received. Memorials are preferred to Cerenity Humboldt.
