Don grew up in Ottertail, Minnesota and enlisted in the Army after graduating from Perham High School. He was very fortunate to be stationed in Hawaii where he became a staff sergeant and played on the Army football and lacrosse teams. After returning home, he went into the printing business at the Henning Advocate newspaper. Printing became his career and he went from the old standard of typesetting those tiny individual metal letters into the digital age. He retired from Webb Publishing as electronic publishing manager. While employed, he received the Employee of the Year award for his desktop publishing idea, which was a significant financial savings for the company. Webb sent him on a memorable European vacation to several countries. Even though he played football in high school and the Army, Don’s favorite sport was baseball. He loved fishing and hunting and was also an avid reader. He was a talented woodworker and made pieces of furniture and jewelry boxes. Don was a quiet man but he enjoyed telling an occasional funny story to make us laugh and if something was broken around the house, he could almost always fix it!
The family is grateful to all the doctors and nurses at the VA and HealthPartners Hospice for their kind and wonderful care.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held on Thursday, April 11. Visitation at 11:00 a.m.; Service at 11:30 a.m.; all at Wulff Funeral Home, 1485 White Bear Ave N, St. Paul, Minnesota 55106.
