Virginia was born on June 1, 1939 in Bernie, Mo to Frank and Esther Carson. She attended Missouri Baptist Nursing School graduating in 1962. During nursing school, she met Tom, from Rogersville Mo., and they married in 1964. While Tom spent 40 years as a diesel mechanic at Fabick Tractor Company, Virginia worked at City Hospital, which she pointed out every time they passed it on the way to the baseball game; Missouri Pacific Hospital where she was assistant director of nursing; and Cardinal Ritter Institute, where she found her true calling in geriatric nursing. At the time of Tom’s death in November, 2015, they had been married 51 years.
Virginia and Tom had three children: Christie, of Jefferson City; Mark (Kathy) of Chandler, AZ; and Tammy Stich (Todd) of St. Louis; and two grandchildren, Jacob and Sarah Stich of St. Louis.
Virginia and Tom loved nothing more than being surrounded by family, laughing and eating. Family included friends and the many foreign exchange students who stayed at their home. Peter, a student from Germany, became a second son and brother. In their house, you were shown where the glasses were stored once. After that, you became family and you could make yourself at home. Virginia and Tom taught their children that there was always room for one more at their table and there was no requirement to call in advance. The door was always open. However, when they started rattling dishes in the morning, it did not matter who you were, the day had started.
Virginia and Tom instilled their love of travel in their kids through two week family vacations every summer. They always returned saying “never again” after officiating the constant complaints three kids can produce. But the following summer, the car was loaded and they were off on another adventure. Virginia instilled her lifelong love of reading in each of her children, always packing the car with several books for each kid which had to be finished by the end of the trip.
They continued their love of traveling throughout their retirement. In addition to their exploration of the U.S., they saw the world including many European countries and Australia where they had a late-night encounter with a kangaroo. Of all the places they went, they spoke the most of their travels to Alaska and Ireland. When they weren’t off on an adventure, Tom enjoyed playing golf and attending his weekly Monday morning breakfasts with the boys while Virginia read and was always planning the next trip.
Virginia and Tom shared their faith, love of music (Virginia's beautiful soprano voice filled the house), the outdoors and the Cardinals with their kids. While they loved their kids, their joy was passing on these traditions to their grandchildren Jacob and Sarah. Strangely, whatever rules they had for their children went right out the window when Jacob was born.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Garden View Care Center (Dougherty Ferry) and Accent Hospice for the incredible care they gave mom during the last years of her life.
Graveside services will be held in the future. If you would like to make a memorial contribution please consider Third Baptist Church, The Humane Society of Missouri, or Memory Care Home Solutions. But, the best way to honor them is to open your door and invite someone to your table. Tell them that Tom and Virginia invited them.
