Stephen Reeves Waltman of St. Louis, Missouri died on April 7, 2023. Stephen graduated from MIT, Yale Medical School, and Ophthalmology residency at Washington University. He stayed on as chief resident and faculty before moving into private practice. He specialized in cornea transplant surgery and took pleasure in restoring sight to thousands of patients, remarking “just another day of stamping out disease and blindness.” During the Vietnam War, he served as an Army Major, taking care of wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital. Later in his career, he found great joy in teaching residents at the VA Hospital. A life-long student, he completed his MBA at Washington University. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing squash, traveling, and making the corniest of jokes.
Stephen is survived by Gillian, his wife of 50 years; his children, Belinda (Matt) and Mike (Michelle); his sister, Toni; and grandkids, Sienna, Leo, and Luke.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Louis Society for the Blind or any Veterans’ charity.
