Loving husband of Audrey (nee Mullen) Mehan for 63 years; dear father of Richard Jay Jr. (Nancy), Mary Catherine “Mollie” (Timothy Sr.) Lucchesi, Thomas Joseph (Colleen) Mehan, John Anthony Sr. (Katie) Mehan, Margaret Anne “Peggy” (John) Lord, Patrick Niall Sr. (Kelly) Mehan; grandfather of Richard Jay III “Rich”, Maureen, Timothy Jr., Katie (Jason) Gray, Bridget, Anna, Brendan, Grace, Maggie, Margaret “Meg”, John Jr. “Jack”, Anne, Claire, Kathleen, Patrick Jr., Daniel, Audrey and Erin; great-grandfather of Gianna; son of the late Dr. George T. Mehan, Sr. and Adele (Pfeffer) Mehan; brother of George T. Jr. (Lillian) Mehan and Michael (Margaret) Mehan and the late Dr. Donald (Peggy) Mehan; uncle, and friend.
Graduated from Barat Hall Academy, St. Louis University High School 1941, Saint Louis University A.B., and Saint Louis University School of Law 1950. Judge Mehan served in the Army of the United States in the European theater during World War II, and in the United States Air Force Reserve during the Korean War. He was the Republican candidate for Mayor of the City of St. Louis in 1957. He worked in private practice until his appointment as a judge to the Circuit Court for the City of St. Louis, the 22nd Judicial Circuit.
For ten years he was a panelist on the Sunday morning television show “Quiz A Catholic”. He served as president of the St. Elizabeth Academy Father’s Club 1970-71. As a dedicated member for 50 years and past president of the Serra Club of St. Louis, he encouraged vocations to the priesthood. Active in the continuing legal education of lawyers and judges, he was the author of CLE programs and books, especially his “McGuffey’s Eclectic Reader on Evidence”, and mentor to many.
Services: Funeral Mass Saturday, December 21st, at 11:00 am at his parish church Our Lady of Sorrows, 5020 Rhodes Ave. and S. Kingshighway. Internment, Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Masses preferred or donations to Our Lady of Sorrows Endowment Fund. Visitation Friday, from 2 – 8 pm at Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary, 6464 Chippewa.
