Dear Patti's Family and Friends:

After a much hurried morning I found myself in Terminal C wandering about looking for my gate, and ostensibly, Patti.  I don't travel through STL that often, but when I do I look for Patti.

Since the old days over in Terminal A at Gate 7 when I first met Patti until now, she has been someone I looked forward to seeing each time I traveled through the airport. 

Whether I was on a business trip as a lawyer, or in my other job as a flight attendant for AA, Patti always made sure to look out for me and "her passengers."  Her smile was a welcome that no one could avoid.

When my mother was traveling back and forth between STL and Houston for cancer treatment, she would generously ask her if she needed anything.  I always knew when I wasn't there non-reving, Patti would look out for my family.

When I asked the agents at Gate C 18 if Patti was around last week, they just stared at me.  I hadn't really traveled much on AA lately and knew it had been awhile since I'd seen Patti.  One of the agents said "Patti who?"  And, all I could say was "you know, perky happy smily Patti."  They replied, Vitello?  And I said - Oh yeah, that's her - is she working today.

Then the devastating news.  

Patti wasn't just that perkly, happy, smily girl - she was that "connection" we all have in our lives that make things feel like home.  Patti's face was like going home ... once you saw her, visited a bit, you knew all would be okay.  She made you feel that way.

I am so sad that Patti is gone, and for my ignorance in not knowing her illness had progressed.  I remember visiting with her about her battle with her eye and her concerns about returning to work.  Patti showed me that you could be more than your illness and not let it define you.  She reminded me that there is LIFE.

Now, as I mourn her loss, I am still reminded that there is life.  Her life.  One so rich and bold.  One so strong and determined.  To have known Patti is a blessing to my life, but her absence is one that I will have to grow to accept.  

There will not however ever be a day I won't walk through the AA Terminal at STL and think, where's my Patti?  Where's that smile.  Now, instead of looking down those long corridors and counters I will have to simply LOOK UP and know she is with God looking down.  Then I can smile back at her.

You were loved more then you know - by those that may have been nothing but strangers, but you were and always will be special Patti.

Working with her at AA was always a pleasure and lots of fun

I met Pattie when I started working at the airport about 4years ago when I first met her I was just amazed on how beautiful her eyes were and I told her she had the most beautiful eyes of any human or animal I know of. I would talk to her about her love of pets and how many she had. I would kid her about having some of her pets in her coffin when she died. I did know it would be so soon. We talked about the dogs that had died and so on. When she told me about her cancer I told her I would pray for her every week. I express my condolences to her family and especial to the sister who went with her to her treatments at the University of Pennsyvania  Allan Cohen (St Ann Mo)

Patty was - and still is in our thoughts - fighting for the underdog, taking care of those she felt were overlooked and in need of justice. Patty was also a dear friend for many years at American. She opened her home and her heart to others. Tim and I will miss her spot on sense of humor, but we know she is somewhere else bringing joy, comfort, and a good laugh to others. With love in our hearts for you, and prayers for your family, Patty, you will be missed.

Dear Cathy, I'm so sorry for your familys loss. I can only remember Patty and smile. I always thought that the Vitello girls had that special something that you can only be born with. My prayers are with you and your family. Cherri Elder, Dittmer MO. (chilhood friend)

I have been so blessed to have Patty in my life.  She was one of the best people I have ever known.  We had so much fun together over the years and her full of life attitude was infectious. Patti was an instant wonderful friend the first time Denny introduced us.  She was always into fun and great times.  Her smile and laugh was the best to be around.  I told her she reminded me so much of Uma Thurman that when she'd call she would say this is Uma and I had her in my phone log as Uma Patti.  She thought that was a wonderful compliment.  Caught the end of a movie last night with smiling Uma in it and just felt Patti's presence.  So loved Patti and will miss the great times we could have had in the future together.  Her bravery and dignity through her illness was astounding and we can all learn from it.  She was such a true fighter for life.  I will never forget her.  Denny, I am so glad you had Patti in your life, she made you whole.  I know you'll treasure your memories the rest of your life.  My deepest sympathies to the Vitello family.

I am so sorry for your loss.  I will always have wonderful memories of Patty as  co worker and friend.
