It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Melvin Henry Zimmermann, age 98, of St. Louis, Missouri on Monday, July 10, 2023. Melvin was born May 17, 1925, in St. Louis Missouri to the late Peter G. and Anna Zimmermann.
Mel was known as a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many during his journey through life. A proud WWII veteran, dedicated advertising professional, loving family man, devout man of faith, and an avid lover of fishing, boating, reading, and sports. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and adventure that will forever be cherished.
Mel grew up in a world grappling with the devastating effects of WWII. Displaying his spirit of patriotism and bravery, he answered the call to serve his country at the young age of 18 and joined the ranks of the US Navy. His courageous efforts and sacrifice during the war exemplified his dedication to the principles of freedom and justice that he held dear. Mel’s passion for fine art and exceptional talent to paint are still remembered today because of the decorative painting dubbed, “Angel’s Coffin,” he created as the motto for the munitions carrier ship, the USS Sangay which he served on, and is exhibited at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum in Pittsburg, PA.
After the war, Mel embarked on a remarkable career in the advertising industry. His creative vision, strategic mind, and work ethic propelled him to the pinnacle of his profession and, eventually, ownership of his own firm, Mel Zimmermann & Associates. With his ability to connect with people, he brought countless ideas to life, leaving an indelible mark on the industry he loved.
In his leisure time, Mel found great joy at the Lake of the Ozarks. Whether it was casting a fishing line, setting out on a boat ride, or immersing himself in the pages of a book or newspaper, he embraced the beauty of the world around him. He also delighted in the camaraderie and excitement of sports, cheering on his favorite college and professional teams, and watching the ones he loved compete.
Mel was a devoted family man who cherished his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His home was a sanctuary of love, filled with laughter, cherished memories, and the warmth of his welcoming spirit. He embraced the role of father and grandfather with open arms, instilling in his loved ones the importance of integrity, compassion, and the pursuit of one's passions. Deeply rooted in his Catholic faith, Mel was an active member of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Parish for over 34 years.
Mel leaves behind a loving family, including wife and soulmate of 74 years, Mary A. Zimmermann (nee Leitner); loving father of Darlyne (the late Mike) Behnen, Diane (Joe) Barron, Thomas (Dana) Zimmermann and Donna (Daniel) O'Toole; dearest grandfather of Craig Behnen, David Behnen, Carolyn Behnen, Kirk Barron, Julie Scheitlin, Scott Barron, Luke Zimmermann, Reid Zimmermann, Shae Zimmermann, Anna O'Toole, Emma Birks and Kayla O'Toole. Mel will leave in his memory his 11 great grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends and acquaintances who were touched by his genuine kindness and spirit.
