On November 4, 2024, Maury passed away in Bangkok, Thailand. Born in 1942 to the late Albert and the late Jeanette Lieberman, he leaves behind his loving wife Leslie Scallet Lieberman, dear brother Fredde Lieberman (Trang); dear sisters-in-law Patricia Scallet and Madelon Scallet (the late Andrew); loving nieces and nephews Rebekah Scallet (Joseph Stafford), Mitchell Scallet (Elisabeth), and Dori Scallet (Joseph Harouni); dear daughter of choice Eden Corado (James); as well as a large extended family of cousins, great-nieces and nephews, and friends.
A DC resident for over 50 years, Maury remained devoted to his home state of Wisconsin, the university at Madison, and Wisconsin sports teams. Trained at Wisconsin, Rutgers, Pitt, and Cornell, he devoted his formal career to federal public service, helping to shape national research on work and mental health. All the while his endless curiosity about people and lives different from his own led him to explore communities, foods, and friendships across this area and the world.
A storyteller of the first rank, Maury believed that everyone had a good story, and his infectious warmth drew them out. He relished the roles of mentor, advisor and contributor to those seeking to repair the world. Travel was his calling, and with Leslie he visited over 100 countries, especially those less touristed, or with legendary trains.
