John was born in Los Angeles, the son of Ethel and John McNamara. He began his college career at Santa Clara University and joined the Marines soon after Pearl Harbor. Upon completing service during WWII, he returned and graduated from the College of the Pacific on the GI Bill.
Following graduation, John taught Chemistry at UC Berkley but wanted to do more. He applied and was accepted to St. Louis University Medical School. It was during that time that he happened to go on a blind date and met his the love of his life, Norrine. They were married 61 years. Mac, as he was known to many, chose to specialize in radiology, graduated with honors and began his career first at the Veterans Administration Hospital and then with St. Mary’s Health Center where he worked for over 30 years. He was the head of the radiology department and developed a private radiology practice and taught at SLU Med School. Mac often said how much he enjoyed training residents in the teaching program at the hospital. He loved attending conferences and doing continuing education throughout his career. When he retired he was remembered for his special ministry at the hospital.
John was an active member and regular golfer at Glen Echo Country Club for over 40 years. He was a member and fundraiser for the Alumni Association at St. Louis University Medical School. He was a devout parishioner at Immacolata Church in Richmond Heights and later at St. Joseph’s Church in Clayton.
Dr. Mac was a people person, a warm hearted man who embraced life to the fullest. He loved to laugh and joke with everyone whether patient, friend, or family. He touched countless lives and will be missed by many.
John is survived by six children and spouses, Anne (Philip) Shinn, Zoe (Bob) Glik and Dan (Elizabeth) McNamara of St. Louis; Susanne (David) Woods of Stamford, CT; Chris (Neil) Clemmons of Wilmette, IL; and John (Angela) McNamara of Plano ,TX He is also survived by his grandchildren - Margaret (Matt) Mikolajewski and Andrew (Jemile) Shinn; Wyot, Nick and Jack Woods; Bill Glik; Alex (Jessica) and Shannon Clemmons; Lauren and Kathleen McNamara; and Nicholas McNamara, and great granddaughter Elise Norrine Mikolajewski.
