Maguire, John P. a former executive of General Dynamics and Forbes Publishing, and founder of J. P. Maguire Investment Advisors, Inc., died on Friday, March 11, 2011 in Creve Coeur, MO. He was 93. Mr. Maguire's career at General Dynamics spanned a thirty-three year period from 1954 to 1987. Mr. Maguire moved to St. Louis in 1971 when General Dynamics moved its corporate headquarters to that city. At the time of his retirement he was a Corporate Vice President and Secretary. Mr. Maguire also served for two years (1960-62) as Secretary and General Counsel of Texas Butadiene & Chemical Corporation, a New York City based petrochemical concern that was acquired by Sinclair Oil Corporation in 1962. Prior to joining General Dynamics in 1954, Mr. Maguire was an associate lawyer at Cravath, Swaine & Moore from 1943 to 1954 except for the years 1950 to 1952 when he served as a Vice President and Director of the Forbes Publishing Co. and as Managing Director of Forbes Investors Advisory Institute. Following his retirement from General Dynamics, Mr. Maguire and his son Peter founded J. P. Maguire Investment Advisors, Inc. in St. Louis, which was combined with Fiduciary Asset Management Co. in early 1995. Mr. Maguire was active in many civic and education organizations, having served as a Trustee of Webster University, St. Bonaventure's University, John Burroughs School of St. Louis, CORO, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the St. Louis World Affairs Council and Independence Center. He was also chairman of the Investment Committees of the Art Museum and John Burroughs School. Mr. Maguire attended Holy Cross College for one year; graduated from Babson College in 1936; from Princeton University in 1941; and from Yale Law School in 1943. He was awarded honorary degrees by Babson College and St. Bonaventure University. Mr. Maguire was born in New Britain, Connecticut in 1917. Prior to his move to St. Louis, he lived at various times in Hartford, CT; New York City, and Locust Valley and Lloyd Harbor, Long Island. Mr. Maguire is survived by a daughter, Joan G. Maguire of St. Louis, Mary-Emily Jones Maguire, his wife of 64 years, died in April, 2009.
