George Frederick Koob “Pop”, 78, of St. Louis, MO, passed away on September 23rd, 2023, after a battle with myelofibrosis. He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn Koob (Newbern); daughters: Lisa (Jon) Clyne, and Lauren (Brady) Tomlinson; grandchildren: Jordan and Elise Clyne, Parker and Hallie Tomlinson, and his beloved dog daughter Sandy. George was born on December 30th, 1944, to Lila and Elmer Koob in St. Louis, MO. After he graduated from Ladue High School, he attended the Missouri School of Mines Rolla. He graduated with a Civil Engineering degree and was a proud member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
After Rolla, George enlisted in the Navy where he attended Officer’s Candidate School. He became a captain in the United States Naval Construction Battalion, known as the Seabees. He served 2 years active duty including deployment to Vietnam followed by several years in the Naval Reserves. George was incredibly honored to be a Seabee. He was thankful to have been part of such an esteemed group and it was a part of his identity that he revered.
Upon return from Vietnam, George enrolled in the M.B.A program at St. Louis University where he met his wife Marilyn. They married in 1974, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Ladue, MO. George worked many years for the HBE Corporation as a Vice President, was an entrepreneur and developer of many construction projects including Palisades Yacht Club at Lake of the Ozarks, and U.S. Ice Sports Complex formerly occupied in Chesterfield Valley, MO. He owned his own construction company G.F. Koob and Associates and later sold commercial real estate with The Wolken Group and the Steve Lechner Group.
Family was incredibly important to George. He was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. George was a champion fisherman that enjoyed many fishing trips with friends and grandchildren. He was also an avid tennis player, playing in a men’s league for many years at Woodsmill Racquet Club as well as an accomplished snow skier. He also enjoyed participating in the Wildwood Lions Club and was a volunteer at the St. Louis Zoo as a train engineer. He also assisted with several veterans’ activities including The Flags of Valor. After retirement one of his greatest joys was cheering on his grandchildren at sports games. He rarely missed a game and was his grandchildren’s number one fan.
George was much beloved and the Seabee motto “Can Do” epitomized his very being. He graciously did for his family and others. His family adored him for his creativity, ingenuity and selflessness. Pop will be dearly missed.
A private family service will be held on October 6th, 2023, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
