I first met Gary in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the winter of 1975. We were both recently hired to work at the University of Alaska on the same program. Both new to Alaska, we bonded as we adapted to Fairbanks and found fun pursuits to share after work around the campus and in the town. We became friends immediately and supported one another while at work and at play. 

Although I left the university to join the U.S. Foreign Service, I returned to Fairbanks on the occasion of Gary's marriage and to help celebrate the dawn of what became, I believe, the happiest time of his life as a family man.
