Donald J. Katz, 85, peacefully passed away on February 1, 2016, at his home in Swansea, Illinois. He was born on September 4, 1930, in Belleville, Illinois, to Sol and Pauline (Smith) Katz. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Arlene (Pollack) Katz; sister Alyce Rosenthal Weiss; sister-in-law Rita Pollack; his children, Shelly Silverberg and Andy (Julie) Katz; and his grandchildren, Amanda (Garrett) Fischer, Rachel Silverberg, Kelsey (Jon) Hansen, Lindsey Katz, and Noah Silverberg.
He attended Belleville West High School and then graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He was a member of the United States Army and served his country in the Korean War. He then worked as a pharmacist for many years. Don served as the President of Agudas Achim-Beth Israel Synagogue for many years, and he was the Treasurer for the Village of Swansea for 10 years. He was a Mason and a Shriner, and he was a member of the VFW and the Elks.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at Agudas Achim-Beth Israel Synagogue in Belleville, Illinois, followed by a service at 2:30 p.m. A graveside burial service will immediately follow at Agudas-Achim Beth Israel Cemetery in Belleville.
