She was a dedicated volunteer and an extraordinary friend and bridge player to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her devotion to her family and friends knew no bounds, and her unwavering faith in God shone through in every aspect of her life. Born in St. Louis to Pearl and Clarence Jurgesmeyer, Betty Jo's journey began in University City, where she found lifelong companions in her first cousins, John, and Mildred (Millie) Owings, as well as the vibrant community from the 13 brothers and sisters from her mother's side, the Morris family.

From her early years, she embraced her Christian faith, actively participating in church Bible School and youth groups. It was at University City Methodist Church where she met her first husband,John E. Gilliam, and father to her children, John D. and Beverly Jo.

She cherished her time working at American Legion Post 397, particularly during their Friday Fish Frys, where she delighted in contributing to the Post's success. She found immense joy in projects like Girls' State and the Oratorical Contest, leaving a positive impact on the lives of countless young individuals.
For over 40 years, Betty Jo dedicated herself to the auxiliary and volunteered her time for the betterment of the Legion and the countless veterans they supported. Her commitment led her to serve as the 10th District Auxiliary President and later as the Department of Missouri Auxiliary President, taking her across the state to connect with various Posts and auxiliary groups. She also served as the Hospital Representative at Jefferson Barracks Veterans Hospital for 39 years. Additionally, she was a Chapeau for the St. Louis County Salon 16.
In the midst of her active life, Betty Jo found her soulmate in Kenneth Kieffer. Their love story blossomed at the American Legion Hall in Creve Coeur.
