Betty was born in Foley, MO on January 4, 1935, to Lenora Riffle (McQueen) and Clinton Lavern Riffle. Betty grew up in Foley where her family had a general store in addition to a small farm just outside of Foley. Betty attended school in Foley and later in Elsberry, MO where she graduated. She and her husband, Larry, grew up together in Foley and were later married on Sept. 13, 1953. Betty was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Betty had a long career in the US Postal service serving over 27 years in various offices including Foley MO, Winfield MO, Elsberry MO and Paynesville MO. She loved the interaction with all the postal patrons, many of whom became her friends. It was not uncommon for her to suggest various stamps and additional postal items that would correspond and coordinate with whatever event the people were hosting.
Betty had a great love of gospel music and loved going to big gospel singings in various locations including the New Year’s Eve singing at the Kingsland Theater. She loved travelling to Washington DC to soak in all the sights and history including the Candlelight Tour at the White House during Christmas time. Additionally, she travelled various times to Europe with her family.
Betty served faithfully at Foley Baptist Church as pianist for over 60 years. She led Sunday school classes, church training, Bible studies and Bible school. Betty played for most of the funerals conducted at Foley during that time in addition to countless weddings. Her love of music and the piano were well known. She was always there to comfort others in addition to helping others wherever and whenever she could. She became a regular attender at Second Baptist Church in St. Louis, MO after she and Larry moved to Creve Coeur, MO. She loved her family with her whole heart and her final words were for them as she whispered, I love you.
Betty was a devoted mother, wife, and servant of the Lord.
Betty is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, Larry, her daughter Julie, her son Darryl, her granddaughter Kara (Ken) and great grandson Charlie. She leaves behind a Cousin Ruby Werdehausen in addition to countless friends and family. Betty will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service for Betty will be held on September 16, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Second Baptist Church, 9030 Clayton Rd., St. Louis, MO 63117
