He was born on March 15, 1930, in Rose Hall, Guyana to Alma Harding and George Daly. He was formerly married to Pamela Chapman and remarried Helmtraud (Helen) Blech.
After earning degrees at McGill University and Concordia University in Canada and in the U.S. at St. Michael’s College including a doctorate at Albany State University, he pursued a career as an English teacher. First at Chambly County High School and later at Centennial Regional High School in Greenfield Park, QC. His students remember him fondly as a teacher who pushed them to excel and whose influence had a positive impact on their lives.
In addition to his commitment to teaching, he was involved in a number of activities serving as a lay reader for the Montreal Anglican Church, a board member of the Montreal Diocesan Theological College and as a parishioner at St. George’s Anglican Church. Proud of his Guyanese heritage he spent many years contributing his time and energy to the Montreal Guyanese Association.He enjoyed gardening, travel, British comedies, rooting for Arsenal FC, and spoiling the family dog.
Ivan is the last surviving member of his siblings including Owen Welch, Ashton Philip, Carlton Daly, Rosalind Harding, Stanley Adore, Lillian James and Erna Djoulde. He is survived by his children Pamela Ann Smith (Iain Smith) of London, U.K; Marcia Harding of Leeds, U.K; and Jennifer Harding Piggott (Wynter Piggott) of Bridgetown, Barbados; Daniel Harding (Marie-Claude Guay) of Montreal, QC; and Alison Harding-Shogilev(Matthew Shogilev) of Ottawa, ON; his grandchildren Katie, Hannah, Victoria, Nathaniel, Kester, and Benjamin; his great grandson Marley; and his many nieces and nephews in Canada, the U.S., and Guyana. His son Paul Harding, formerly of London, U.K. predeceases him.
