Condolences. I only recently heard that Derek had passed. I'd known him since the mid 1980's. The last time we spent together was at the loft we used to rent for business, for an impromptu dinner and convo. He brought a lovely bottle of wine, we had a superb dinner and talked for hours about all of our memories at CCHS. He was a terrific guy, and had amazing energy. He added tremendous value in every interaction. Sending positive vibes. <3

Dear John, Donald and friends - please excuse the 2 year delay, I just found this.  Derek was a constant for so long, I've had trouble knowing where to start.  As the eternal "nice guy" from high school, he kept in touch no matter how far or how often I moved ... every year, he'd connect.  I always believed it was his lack of family (following Stefan's death) that made him bond so much with his friends near or far, but I think it's just the way he was:  people were important, and he kept the connections alive.  If I wasn't home when he'd call, I'd get an update from my husband (who he'd never met) about their several-hour conversation, then I'd hear from Derek a few days later, and the conversation would continue.  He just liked making connections. I loved hearing about how work took him to the far corners of the earth and the adventures he'd get up to in Asia, South America, or wherever ...  and more recently his enthusiasm for Burning Man, Midnight Poutine and yurts.  It was his intent to visit me (and another artist friend of his in Halifax) in Nova Scotia for many years:  he did book a cottage across the road from me THREE TIMES, only to have medical disasters each time and have to abandon the plan three years in a row.  I was most pleased that the last trip was to be simultaneous to a visit from our high school friend Annie, who he secretly adored for decades,  and I hoped they'd get some quality time together.  There aren't many people in that category of friendship; one who is always there, always finds you, and always has a good story to tell.  I miss him, appreciated how he kept in touch, and know the world is a better place because of the brightly burning spirit of Derek.

I just learned that Derek passed away.

I had not seen Derek in years but we chatted on facebook from time to time and I remember our evenings out for a meal while we worked together in Bombardier Recreational Products in Valcourt.

I will miss his quirky sense of humour and lively discussions.

I met Derek while working in BC, he was such an amazingly kind & generous man. We had great conversations about life, love & burning man. With his intellect and wit we had great days and evenings on the project.  A glass of wine & a few friends & he was in his element. 
Derek you will be greatly missed by myself & all the work colleagues we interacted with. Be happy in your reunion with your brother in the summer lands. Until we meet again my friend, blessed be.

I met Derek when I was 13, living in St-Lambert and we were a group of friends with Derek.  My favorite memories of Derek is that he was kind, very funny and highly intelligent, his vocabulary was like he spoke out of a dictionary, using sophisticated words that most people did not use, I used to tell him he should be a writer. We had many fun evenings hanging out in St-Lambert, at the park, at Kapetan's restaurant, evenings in clubs and bars having fun, dancing, talking, Derek loved to have fun. 
There were many sad conversations about the pain of losing his brother at such a young age and thinking back of these conversations, it still makes me sad, for him and his family. 
Derek, you will be missed, more than you know, rest in peace now on the other side. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, co-workers.
