Steven Kmetz

Kmetz, Steven M, 54 of St. Clair Shores, passed away May 19, 2013. He is survived by his loving wife Sarah (Collinson) father of Laura (David) Gutknecht, Daniel (Courtney) and Amanda, son of Dolores and the late Edward Kmetz, Brother of the late Edward Jr, Robert, Cynthia (James) Campbell, David and Michael (Betsy).

Visitation will be on Thursday, May 23 from 1-9 pm with a service at 7:30, in the Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores. Funeral Mass will be on Friday, May 24,there will be an in-state period from 9:30 until the Funeral Mass begins at 10 am in the St. Gertrude campus of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church.

Steve Kmetz was born at St. John’s Hospital in March of 1959. He was the fourth child of six children. He graduated from Grosse Pointe South High School and he found the love of his life at Damman Hardware. A little over 30 years later his daughter Amanda had Mr. Damman as a professor at Oakland University.

Steve and his love, Sarah were married in 1982 and had their first daughter, Laura, in 1984, the first grandchild on the Kmetz side. Daniel was born in 1986 and Amanda was born in 1989. Steve and Sarah raised their children in a little 900 square foot house in St. Clair Shores. Steve and Sarah lived in the house together for 30 years and it was where he took his final breath.

Steve worked in Heating and Cooling for most of his career. He bored his children with stories about installing roof tops around the area and he enjoyed staying current with the latest technologies in the industry. When Laura and her husband Dave moved into their house he made sure to get them the best furnace and air conditioner he could find them. He even made his guys put in shiny new duct work and encouraged Laura to show off her new HVAC system to visitors.

Steve loved sharing ideas. If you were on his email list you likely got funny emails en masse. He was always a good reference for that “funny noise in my car” or the computer “not working”. He also loved telling people that he had awesome kids. Whether they were going to college, an engineer, or just running around helping other people, he was proud of them.

Steve’s legacy lives on in his children. Laura is a full time Advanced Manufacturing Engineer creating American made assembly lines for Sunroofs, Daniel is a retired Marine working toward his engineering degree at Kettering and Amanda finished her bachelor’s degree at Oakland University and she is working full time at a Language Training company (Mango Languages).
