The Mission
A Tribute to Leroy Holmes from His Son Matthew

My Father was always on a mission.  Maybe it was his upbringing or maybe it was the military, nonetheless he was on a mission.

He was on a mission to marry the most beautiful woman in the world. He found Mom! He met her, married her two weeks later and remained married for 59 years until she went to be with God.
Mission Accomplished!

He was on a mission to serve his country. He spent 20 years in the Air Force. He deployed and served in Korea and Vietnam, all while raising a family.
Mission Accomplished!

He was on a mission to raise his sons to be godly men, to be the head of the household, work hard, and treat people with dignity, respect, and honesty. He set the example for his sons so that they would raise their children in the same way. 
Mission Accomplished!

He was on a mission every time he drove somewhere. It was recorded time, place, gas mileage, and stops. Most importantly, how long it took to get there. He could have beaten Mario Andretti in an Indy car on a trip to Florida with a one-ton diesel van.
Mission Accomplished!

His most important mission was to serve God. He took his family to church. He read the bible and taught it to his children. He served in the church.  He believed that Jesus was God and his salvation. He knew that with his last breath on earth that his next breath would be looking at the face of God.
Mission Accomplished!

I love you Dad. You and Mom make room for all of us. We will be there when our chores are through!


My sincerest condolences to Leroy’s family. Leroy was a wonderful human, and always brightened my day when he would come into our cardiac rehabilitation unit. He would always bring coffee for the staff and always stated with a smile, “no problem, it’s my job!” He was an amazing story teller, a great listener, and a dear friend. I will miss him greatly. His love for his family and friends radiated through his words. I am very happy to know that he can join his wife now, whom he missed very much.  

My Sincere condolences to the family. My prayers are with all of you.

I only knew Leroy for a short time, but his resilience and strength was always an inspiration.  I worked with him in the cardiac rehabilitation unit with Shannon Farrell,RN at Beaumont GP.  He was a very strong and pleasantly stubborn man steadfastly dedicated to his wife, his  family and that beautiful truck!!  He proudly served in the AF and taught me a great deal about respect, dignity and grace.  I feel for his family who will surely miss him daily, but I rejoice in the fact that he is in the Lords arms and reunited with his beautiful wife in heaven.  May these days of grief allow tender moments of sharing pleasant memories.  He spoke of his family often and love you all very very much!!!
