Jonathan “Jock” Carr Mackenzie, age 76, of Lexington, Michigan passed away on Friday, August 2, 2024. Jonathan was born in Detroit, Michigan, to parents Don and Mollie Mackenzie. Loving dad to Jessica (Daniel) Yenchar, Sarah (Joe) Martina, and Andrew Mackenzie. Cherished grandpa to Carson and Skylar. Dear brother to Scott Mackenzie, Cameron (Denise) Mackenzie, and Keith Mackenzie. Jonathan will be missed by many family and friends.
Jonathan received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Grand Valley State University and his daughter followed in his footsteps by attending GVSU as well from his recommendation!
Jonathan had many unique jobs when he was young including a banana inspector and working on freighters as a deckhand and helmsman. He eventually spent most of his career at Whiting Warehouse in Hamtramck. Upon retirement from Whiting, Jock started a handyman business in Lexington where he remodeled many a cottage as well as built decks and sheds. Jonathan made many friends in Lexington through his business and coveted and cherished those friendships.
Jock loved to travel. He made several trips to Europe including France and Italy. He enjoyed yearly trips to Myrtle Beach with his golfing buddies and also golfing excursions to Arizona with his group. California was another trip he frequented to visit his lifelong friend Kurt. His lifetime love was visits to the Homestead, a family home, in Jamestown, Rhode Island.
Besides travel Jock had many hobbies. He liked to tinker around his house and do “projects”. He took to gardening, cooking (his famous mac n’ cheese, a grandkid favorite), baking (pies and tarts, often given as gifts welcomed by friends and family), canning salsa and jams, crossword puzzles, playing cribbage with his brother Cam, golfing, croquet and reading.
Jock was a devoted dad and grandpa. Jock spent many years coaching baseball and softball for his son and daughter. He was always there to help with homework. He worked hard to provide family vacations for his kids while growing up and gave them experiences not soon forgotten. He was selfless when dealing with his kids and was endlessly proud of them. This held true with his grandkids as well. He supported everything they did and tried. He always tried to provide a positive and fun space for the grandkids during visits that included food they loved, painting rocks, swimming, board games, and other activities. He was a loving presence in their lives and they felt it.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, August 18th beginning at 3:00 p.m. until time of service at 6 p.m. at Kaul Funeral Home 28433 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores, Michigan 48081. Visitation will continue after service until 8 p.m.
Memorial donations in memory of Jonathan are suggested to Special Olympics Macomb.
