Craig Smith, a loving father, grandfather, husband, and brother passed away on November 20, 2023, at the age of 79. Born on November 15, 1944, in Pontiac, Michigan, Craig leaves behind a legacy of love, passion for the arts, and genuine connections with everyone he met.
Craig is survived by his daughters, Julie Smith (David) and Megan Gunnell (Freeman); his four cherished grandchildren, Elliott Gunnell, Hannah Gunnell, Liam Black, and Dylan Black; and his brother, Sheldon Smith and sister-in-law, Sue Wadel. He is also survived by his first wife, Carol Mortensen. Craig was preceded in death by his second wife, Elaine Goldman. He is survived by Elaine's children, Shelly Goldman (Bernhard), Herschel Goldman and Marsha Uffelman (Brad).
A talented graphic designer with a passion for modern art, Craig held a Master of Fine Arts from Wayne State University and a Bachelor of Arts from Drake University. He applied his talents professionally with positions at both Burroughs and Chrysler.
In addition to his career as a graphic designer, Craig taught art history, design, and humanities at Schoolcraft College in Livonia and Wayne State University in Detroit. His passion for the arts and his mandatory field trips to museums left a lasting impact on the countless students he taught regardless of whether they pursued art professionally.
An avid painter, Craig found solace and inspiration in his frequent visits to the Detroit Institute of Arts, a place he held dear to his heart. Craig's love for the arts included music, particularly through his piano playing and singing in his church choir. He loved listening to James Taylor and Aaron Copland.
His infectious laugh, warm spirit, and handwritten letters touched the lives of many. His memory will forever be associated with the joy he brought to those fortunate enough to have known him.
As we remember Craig Smith, let us celebrate a life rich with creativity, warmth, and a genuine appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds us. May he rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire all who were privileged to know him.
