He began high school boarding in Port Arthur until the family moved to Chatsworth, Ontario. Wayne finished high school at OSCVI in Owen Sound in 1949 before realizing his dream of entering dental school (University of Toronto 5T4 - Doctor of Dental Surgery). While in University he earned an athletic letter through basketball and water polo and was the editor of the HyaYaka, a dental school publication. After graduation, he opened his dental practice in Chesley, Ontario and subsequently relocated to St. Catharines where he practiced until his retirement in 1989. Joan and Wayne were married in 1955 and greatly enjoyed their winters curling and skiing while their summers were spent at the family cottage on Lake Huron. Together they were very active at Mountainview United Church. Wayne was also engaged in the dental community, forming lasting relationships with patients, serving on the council of the Niagara Peninsula Dental Association (President 1969/1970), and as a columnist for the St. Catharines Standard writing “Dentistry Today” under a pen name (Dr. Ian Wayne). Wayne was an accomplished, award winning photographer. He served on the board and as President of the St Catharines Photographic Club. For many years he enjoyed making audiovisual presentations using three projectors, a memory programmer and stereo. Other interests throughout the years included flying, scuba diving, hunting, gardening, woodworking, skiing, curling, golf, traveling and hiking. Soon after retirement, Wayne became involved in the Probus Club of St Catharines, serving as Newsletter Editor and as President (September 1996 -September 1997). He was awarded an honourary Life Membership which he treasured. In more recent years Wayne’s writing and photography skills were seen in his self-published International Letter, “Reflections”. This bimonthly publication was warmly accepted worldwide. In later years, Joan’s deteriorating health placed Wayne in the position of caregiver and he met this challenge with unfailing grace and love. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to so many wonderful caregivers that brightened Wayne’s life during the past few weeks. Special thank you to Dr. Aromolaran, Dani, Flo, Juleigh, and Celeigh.
