Peacefully, in St Catharines, Ontario, Joan passed away at the age of 88 after a long battle with Alzheimers. Joan will be lovingly remembered by her husband Klemance (Ziggy) Ziegler of Welland, Ontario, her daughters Colleen Ziegler and Tammy Ziegler, both of St Catharines, Ontario and was predeceased by her son Theodore (Ted) Ziegler. Joan is also survived by her sister Evelyn Paul (nee Mayer) and her close nieces Sandra Paul and Judith Kunkle all of North Tonawanda, NY.
Born in St Catharines, Ontario in 1933 to William and Hilda Mayer, Joan grew up in Merriton, Ontario and later moved to Woodstock, Ontario where she met her future husband Ziggy, who was playing hockey for the Woodstock Warriors 1954 Junior B Champions. Joan and Ziggy were married in Kitchener, Ontario and later relocated back to St. Catharines to raise their growing family.
Joan was a fantastic and creative mother. She hosted The Merry Monkey Club, inviting all the neighbourhood children to her house for puppet shows, arts and crafts and various organized fun on David Street in Western Hill. When the family moved to Graham Avenue in 1963, this tradition expanded to holding fun fairs in the summer and theatrical productions with her children and their friends in the house for charities.
Joan loved the arts and playing the piano. She was involved with the Press Theatre in the 1960s, Garden City Productions in the 1970s both in St Catharines and the Starlight Theatre in Welland in her 70’s as an actor and helping behind the scenes.
In the 1970’s, Joan worked at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, but was avidly involved with her husband Ziggy at selling collectibles at the Flea Market. Eventually, she left her job to open ENCHANTING ANTIQUES, first in Port Dalhousie and then in the 1980s moving to its present location at 114 Geneva St in St Catharines. Joan and Ziggy also sold voraciously at antique shows throughout Southern Ontario as well as at harbour front Antique Market and St. Lawrence Sunday Market in Toronto right up to before the pandemic.
Joan was also devoted to promoting her son Ted’s art career. She posed for a mural that can be viewed in downtown Welland, commissioned a mural for the side of Enchanting Antiques in St. Catharines and sold his art and prints at her shop and in Toronto. She was always a very positive influence to all of her children and inspired them to live their dreams.
