William "Bill" Patterson McKay, a dedicated serviceman, esteemed legal professional, and beloved friend, passed away peacefully in Springfield, Virginia on April 4, 2025. He is survived by his beloved wife, Leone McKay. Born in Moultrie, Georgia, in 1933, Bill lived a life marked by integrity, commitment, and a deep sense of duty.
A graduate of the University of Georgia, Bill answered the call to serve, entering the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant of Armor. Following nearly two years of service, he pursued his passion for law, earning his degree before returning to the Army in 1959 as a member of the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps. Over the next 27 years, Bill served with honor and distinction, providing legal counsel and leadership until his retirement as a Colonel in 1987.
Over the course of more than 27 years as a Judge Advocate, Bill served in various Army assignments including over 9 years of foreign service. His overseas service included France, South Korea and Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star. His stateside assignments included: Fort Benning, Fort Dix, Fort Sill, Presidio of San Francisco, Fort Shafter, the Army Court of Military Review and Fort Belvoir, from which he retired in 1987. After retiring from active duty, Bill transitioned into civilian life with 10 years of dedicated service at USAA. His unwavering commitment to excellence and his ability to lead and inspire left a lasting impact wherever he went.
The love of Bill's life was his dear wife, Leone. They were married in France on his first JAG assignment and spent over 62 years as husband and wife and best friends. He took great care of Leone and remained dedicated to her until his death.
Throughout his life, Bill embodied the values of dedication and excellence. His legacy is carried forward by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His contributions—both to his country and to those he loved—will never be forgotten.
Private services were held at Quantico National Cemetery.
