Ruth Mengedoht Long, loving wife and mother, age 83, passed away on October 31, 2012 at The Fairfax Retirement Community. She was born in Charleston, South Carolina on August 27, 1929 to Lanville and Claudia Mengedoht. She was a member of Tri Delta Sorority at The College of Charleston which she attended for two years prior to her marriage. As a Navy wife, Ruth devoted her life to service as a volunteer everywhere they were located: a Docent for the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, Pohick Church, and Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia; a Grey Lady at Ft. DeWitt Community Hospital; a volunteer for Navy Relief: and a member of Altar Guilds for numerous Episcopal Churches. She is survived by her husband, Captain David Arthur Long, USN (Ret); daughters, D. Evelyn Lyon, of Alexandria, VA and Catherine L. Spicer, of Aldie VA.; brother, Dr. Daniel Mengedoht and sister Agnes Street, of Charleston, SC, and sisters Barbara Bell of Columbia, SC and Patricia Ball of San Antonio, TX; four grandchildren, Robert L. Spicer IV, Jeremy D.A. Spicer, Rebekah S. Tansey and David A. Spicer; and two Great-Grandchildren, Robert and Keith Spicer. Memorial Service with reception following will be held Friday, November 16, 2012 at 10:00 am at The Fairfax Community Center. The family asks that in lieu of flowers please make donations to Capital Caring 2900 Telestar Court Falls Church, Virginia, 22042.
