Robert (Bob) Somers, 91, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2022. He was the son of Harry and Deborah Somers. Born in Westchester, PA, he spent his young childhood in Pittsburg, PA before his family relocated to Washington, DC and then to Northern Virginia. He resided in Northern Virginia for the remainder of his life. Bob received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond. Upon graduation, he joined the US Navy and spent 22 years combined on active duty and in the reserves, retiring at the grade of Commander (O-5). During active duty he served as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer on the USS Intrepid, an Essex-class aircraft carrier. This was an intense source of pride for Bob as he was well known for never being without his Intrepid ball cap. After leaving active duty, Bob worked at the Washington Tobacco Company and then started his own business, designing and installing commercial kitchens, which he operated until his retirement.
Bob loved the game of golf and was an avid golfer himself. He was a proud and devoted Freemason. Bob was initiated into Masonry in February 1986, progressing to Worshipful Master for the 1992 calendar year, and continuing after to mentor many rising Masons. Bob earned all 32 degrees in Masonry. He was a lifetime member of the Springfield Lodge #217 in Springfield, VA, Royal Arch Masons #77 in Annandale, VA, The Scottish Rite of the Valley of Alexandria, and The Kena Shrine in Fairfax, VA.
Bob was married to, and preceded by, Carolyn Saucier Somers. He is survived by three daughters, Yvonne Somers, Diane Lawson, and Jaimie Somers (Miller), two sons-in-law, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
A memorial service, followed by a gathering of family and friends in celebration of Bob’s life, will take place on Saturday, January 22nd beginning at 4pm at the Herbert Charles Hunter Memorial Masonic Temple, 7001 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22150. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children® (https://lovetotherescue.org/) in his memory.
