

Slim was born on June 13, 1958 in Charleston, West Virginia. He was the son of Ralph and Ellen Darnell and is survived by his wife of 27 years, Betty; sons, Austin and Ben; stepdaughter, Heather; mother, Ellen F. Darnell; sister, Teresa Vallelonga and his Uncle Cecil & Aunt Paula Jean Darnell. He also leaves behind his unique pet, Ernie, his prized 36 year old parrot. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph W. Darnell and sister, Cathy Atwood. Slim was a beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend.
Slim was a graduate of Falls Church High School and held numerous technical and instructional licenses for Steam Engineering in Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC. Slim was Chief Engineer at Watergate for 37 years and Shift Engineer at the Secret Service for 17 years.
Slim was an avid classic car and motorcycle enthusiast. You could always find him riding and working on his bikes and cars in his spare time. His home away from home was in Colonial Beach. He loved fishing, boating and being on the water. Slim also loved watching old westerns and reruns of classic TV shows.
Slim was always a jeans and t-shirt type of a guy. Casual attire for viewing and service are strongly encouraged: especially anything Harley Davidson. Visitation will be held at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, Virginia on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 from 6pm to 8pm. His Celebration of Life will occur on Thursday, August 19, 2021 from 12pm to 1pm at Demaine Funeral Home. Burial will be held on Friday, August 20, 2021 at the Darnell Family Cemetery in Glen, West Virginia.
