Michael was born in Detroit, Michigan to Dr. B. Thomas Malachowski and Elizabeth (née Parent) Malachowski on July 21, 1939. He graduated from the University of Detroit with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and achieved a master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Southern California. He married Judith (née Woodbeck) Malachowski on December 28, 1963, in Detroit, Michigan. He worked as an engineer for Lockheed Martin for eight years in Irvine, California and then ARINC Research in Annapolis, Maryland before joining Naval Air Systems Command where he supported the Tomahawk Cruise Missile Program Office from concept exploration through the retirement of the production line.
He volunteered for many Catholic organizations for decades including serving as an usher at Nativity Parish in Burke, VA and then at St. Raymond of Penafort. He also volunteered at the Fairfax County Prison Ministry where he read scripture and served communion to the Catholic prisoners even when no priest was available. Michael also taught Catholic education for children and Right of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) classes. As a lover of the unborn, he attended every March for Life from inception until he was no longer able to walk well. A major highlight of his life was meeting Mother Teresa for a private mass with her confessor at her convent in DC. He also supported USA Diving by serving as a judge beginning in the mid-1980’s. As an avid golfer, he enjoyed playing a round of golf at home and wherever he traveled.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary Malachowski, Elizabeth (Buffy) Brisson, and Karen Malachowski, brother Johnny Malachowski, and grandson Joseph Michael Declan Jackson.
Michael is survived by his wife Judy, daughters Mary Malachowski, Karen Mislick, and Susie Malachowski, sister Noel DeMothe, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, VA on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 from 4 pm – 8 pm.
Funeral services will be held at St. Raymond of Penafort on September 7, 2023 at 11 am with Father De Celles officiating. A burial will follow at Fairfax Memorial Park in Fairfax, Virginia. Join the Livestream at https://vimeo.com/event/3677377
