Kathleen Marie King

March 6, 1951 to June 30, 2018 Kathleen Marie King passed away unexpectedly on June 30, 2018, at her home in Alexandria, VA, at the age of 67. Kathy was the daughter of the late William F. and Mary (Leapley) King. She is survived by her sister, Mary Patricia (King) Ives, and brother-in-law, Ken Ives; her brother, William F. King, Jr., and sister-in-law, Ellen King; and her brother, Thomas N. King. She is also survived by her three nieces, Rachel (Ives) Siedman, Alison (Ives) Lehner and Julie (Ives) Letson; two nephews, Jason King and William Ives; and six great-nieces, Isabelle, Emma and Hannah Siedman; Georgeanna and Emily King; and Charlotte Lehner; and two great-nephews, Eli and Jacob Letson. Kathy lived most of her life in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County, VA. She attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and St. Mary’s Academy in Alexandria, VA. She graduated from Mary Washington College in 1973, and received her J.D. degree in 1976 from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary. In 1977, she began working as an attorney for the U.S. federal government in the Office of Proceedings, Section of Operating Rights at the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC). She served as an Attorney-Advisor to the Commission’s Secretary starting in 1980. In 1984, she was appointed Assistant Secretary. After the ICC was abolished in 1995, Kathy began working for the Fairfax County Government in the School Age Child Care Program. While with the program, she especially enjoyed working with students on arts and crafts and theater projects. She retired from the County in February 2018. Kathy was active in Potomac Lodge 38 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodges. For many years she participated in the Annual Independent Order of Odd Fellows Pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA and the Special Olympics Annual Night of Trees at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington, DC. She was a life-long Washington Redskins fan and long-time supporter of the Washington Capitals and other local sports teams. She was passionate about politics. She enjoyed painting, basket making, jewelry making and needlework. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Queen of Apostles Catholic Church, 4401 Sano St, Alexandria, VA 22312, on Tuesday, July 17, at 11:00 a.m. Interment at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Alexandria, VA.
