

On March 15, 2023 Joan Howerton of Alexandria, VA passed away at age 90 following a short illness. She was the beloved wife of Allan W. Howerton, her husband of 61 years who preceded her in death. Joan is survived by her son Mark Howerton (Gail) of Richmond VA; daughters Leslie Jones (Randy) of Lynn Haven FL; and Barbara Buzzeo (Scott) of South Riding VA. She is also survived by her sister Kitty Consalvo of Port Orange, FL and granddaughters Kelly, Rachel, Julie, Amy, Kristi, grandson Tyler, and three great-grandchildren.
The daughter of the late William James Miller and Virginia King Miller she was born in Trenton, NJ. After graduation from Bound Brook High School, she completed Nursing School in Philadelphia, PA and pursued her career in nursing in Denver, CO where she met the love of her life, Allan.
After moving to Alexandria, VA in 1967 Joan obtained her Registered Nurse credentials from George Mason University and went on to work at Alexandria Hospital from 1980-2000. After retirement she continued to volunteer her time at Mt. Vernon Hospital in Alexandria. Joan enjoyed traveling with Allan, the art of needlepoint and was a voracious reader. She was a long-time member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria, VA, and an active member of the League of Women Voters.
An inurnment and celebration of life will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria,VA on Monday June 12th at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Building for Ministry Fund of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church of Alexandria, VA or your favorite charity.
