Joan was born in Lake View, NY, to George and Margaret Fierle on August 16, 1922, and was the sixth of nine children. After graduating high school, she enlisted in the Navy WAVES and was stationed at Quantico, VA, where she worked as a dental hygienist. It was there that she met and married her husband, Marine SGT Joseph L. Duffy, on May 19, 1945, in Washington, DC. After WWII they settled in Cleveland, OH, where they raised two daughters: Maureen and Kathleen. They co-founded Bilfield-Duffy Orthopedics and eventually moved it to Ravenna, OH, where Joe created and produced custom braces and supports, and Joan managed the business and rentals for clients and patrons.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, parents George and Margaret, and siblings Ralph, Agnes, George, Eugene. Leonard, Gertrude, Richard and Albert.
Joan is survived by her daughters, Maureen Duffy Ratliff, of Springfield, VA, and Kathleen Duffy Adamle, of Kent, OH; her grandchildren, Mark (Susan) Adamle, Vic (Mary) Adamle, Kelly (Rob) Opaleski, Kerry (Tom) Boulton, Allison Jones, Meagan (Jason) Condrey and Jeffrey Jones; thirteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at a future date at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ravenna, OH. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Demaine Funeral Home.
