Mr. James A. Hawkins, known to his friends as Bubba, was born on September 23 1946, in Wheeling West Virginia. He departed this world on February 12, 2024 at the age of 77 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife Pamela L. Gray Hawkins, his father Charles Hawkins and mother Dorris Litten Hawkins, and Uncle Allen Litten.
Jim is survived by his life partner of 23 years, Carole Wood of Springfield, VA, Step Daughter Wendy Gray Epperler of Herndon, Virginia, Sister Barbara Kempf and Niece Kathryn Barnette of Leavenworth, Kansas, and Aunt Jean Litten of Harrisonburg, Va.
Jim grew up in Alexandria, VA and graduated from Groveton High School in 1964. Jim was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from January 1966 to December 1967. He then attended James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg, VA for 4 years and graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Jim retired in September 2016 as the Chief Financial Officer from Virginia Medical Alliance in Springfield, VA.
Jim enjoyed spending time with friends, going to the beach, country and western dancing, listening to live music and traveling. He was especially proud of his 14 cruises. Jim never missed a single Herndon Festival (Herndon, Virginia) attending all 43 festivals from 1981-2023. He rooted for the Washington Nationals baseball team and the Washington Commanders football team.
Jim was known amongst his family and friends for creating extremely detailed and humorous travel itineraries. He often vacationed with family and friends.
Jim's friends describe him as adventurous, loyal, true to himself, direct, funny, fun loving kind hearted, outgoing (mostly in the company of family and friends), and one of a kind.
Jim's ashes were scattered in the Garber Family Cemetery in Timberville, Virginia, on March 20, 2024.
