Iva Wynn Hanford of Forest, Va went to her eternal home on January 27, 2012. Iva was born on March 21,1918 in Doctor's Inlet Fl. to the late Lucius David Smith and Louella Brown Smith. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Col. Thomas B Hanford, who she supported throughout his military career; her sisters, Marie and Irma and her brothers, David and Porter. She is survived by 5 Children; Lorraine Leahy and husband Jack of Dalton, Ma., Thomas Hanford and wife Diane of Senoia, Ga., Sandie Phillips and husband Fred of Forest, Va., Chet Hanford and wife Mary of Manassas, Va., Jim Hanford and wife Debbi of Fellsmere, Fl., along with 16 Grandchildren, 20 Great grandchildren and 1 Great Great Grandchild. Iva received her Nursing Degree from St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fl. and was night nursing supervisor at Arlington Hospital in Arlington, Va. for more than 20 years before her retirement in 1979. She spent her life caring for people and animals. Her love of gardening was evidenced in the beautiful flower gardens wherever she lived. Iva was a true inspiration not only to her family but also to all who knew her. There are no words to describe what a loving and caring lady Iva was. She will be truly missed. May God cradle her in his arms and grant her eternal rest. Iva's family will receive friends on Thursday, February 9, 2012, from 4-6pm at Demaine Funeral Home 5308 Backlick Road Springfield, Virgina, 22151, 703-549-0074. A Service and Burial will be Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 2:45pm at the Old Post Chapel on Ft. Myer and burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
