I am terribly saddened to hear of Mr. Towery's passing. One of the most truly inspirational men I have ever met. I reconnected with him years after leaving Cameron and he has been such a great mentor and am so lucky he was in my life. He had looked out for me since the day I stepped into Kindergarten and I'll live with his impact for the rest of my life. I leave you all with some advice he gave to me recently: "With my past medical problems I have learned that life is a gift every single day and that taking time to "smell the roses" is critical to log term happiness.  Money and titles are nice but not the answer.  It is human interaction that makes the difference."

Mr. Towery was there in Camerson as the best principal, he was like a grandfather to me and my sister's. He knew everyone by name even when they left Cameron. I even ran into him once after he retired and he still remembered who I was.  He had such a unique voice and I was able to introduce him to my son.  It is so sad to lose such a positive individual in life.  He cared about everyone in such a positive way.  He will definitely be missed.  My prayers for the family.  

The world has lost one of its most valued 
and special people,George Towery. He will live forever fondly and proudly in the hearts of all of us that were fortunate enough to be touched by him.

I was there on his first visit to Lorton Elementary School in the 1970s and as a volunteer and later as his clinic aide and part-time secretary. What a wonderful experience that was for me and our children Carlee, Chip, Cindy, Amy, and Cathy. Our oldest, Carlee went on to Hayfield Secondary that first year but heard the exciting and amusing stories from Lorton. As fate would have it, now after many years Carlee and George's daughter-in-law found themselves working in the same office. He even sent me a copy of his book, "Touched By A Child." 

What a legacy! I only hope that the "powers that be" in FCPS see fit to someday name an elementary school "The George F. Towery Elementary School."

What a wonderful man. It was about 46 years ago when for the first time he showed me that by respecting me as a student - he gained mine.Great job Mr. Towery!

I wasn't a student at Cameron but several of my cousins and friends went there, my sister worked there, my aunt works there, and I still have family who attends. Because of all of that, I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Towery. The relationship he had with his students and staff was something to admire. The level of mutual love and respect, made for a positive and safe environment for everyone, whether you were a student or not, he welcomed you. My family has always been incredibly appreciative all that he brought into our lives. The loss of such a sweet and hardworking man is difficult, but may he rest in peace and his family find peace in knowing that he will live on in the hearts of all those students, parents, family, coworkers, and friends that he greeted with a huge hug and smile.

What I remember most about George Towery was that he saw life through the eyes of his students, particularly the ones that no one else wanted or who were failed by the schools. He was outspoken with adults without being offensive and singular in his focus and devotion to being the voice for children were who mostly ignored. George was a faithful member of the Minority Students Achievement Oversight Committee, always embracing us but holding us steadfast to the purpose of social justice for disenfranchised children. 
Brief were George's days among us but we should not let his passion for his children fade or vanish in our memory.

This was a man who loved life and it showed in every way.  I am so grateful and lucky to have had him as my principal at Cameron Elementary.  I am not even sure what to say here because words cannot even begin to capture what Mr. Towery meant to us kids at Cameron Elementary.  I like to think as we have grown and been able to keep in touch with him via FB, visiting and just support of all his work that he knew we all adored him and loved his spirit. Truly a one of a kind man who is going to be missed by so many.  Thank you Mr. Towery for being you and sharing that with us.  You are going to be missed so much.

One cannot think about George Towery without remembering his kindness and compassion for his students and their families. It was my good fortune, after moving from Rochester NY, to be assigned to Cameron Elementary in 1984 as the Title 1/Chapter1 Math Teacher. 

I was astounded by this humble man who was admired by faculty and staff and beloved by all of his students and their families.   George was selfless--always there for them providing a caring and loving environment.  Moreover, he provided many opportunities that his students may not have experienced otherwise. It was a wonderful learning experience for me to have this role model. 

My prayers and thoughts are with George's family.  George will always be remembered for his service to FCPS and for what he accomplished with his students, all of whom he cared for and did everything he could so that they would be happy and successful adults. What a legacy!

Mr. Towery, you were my rock! You made me the teacher I became and am. While staying with the curriculum, you allowed us educators to have creative license. You encouraged our ideas. You supported us 100% in our dealings with students and parents, but you gave us guidance where and when needed. I personally appreciate your recognition of my strengths and support of my interests. I appreciate your support of me and my family in our personal struggles. I will always love you for all that you did for me, our students, the Cameron community and respect and honor of your staff. You deserve to rest in peace.

Those of us who worked with George Towery will always be grateful for his open-hearted and caring way with children. Our child care center is located in Cameron Elementary; George knew us, and our pre-school children, as a part of Cameron School. There were coats for children who didn't have one, food donations for families in need, and booming-voiced words of encouragement, discipline and humor. Thank you, Mr. Towery, for a lifetime of dedication to children.

How do you put it into words, the difference he made?  He was one of the reasons I still attended Cameron even though my family moved out of that district.  He will be greatly missed.

Mr. Towery was a unique human being who had nothing but love in his heart. I met him when I attended Cameron Elementary, he quickly impressed me with his attention to detail, from remembering every singles kids name to making sure everyone was in good hands. He recognized me for my dedication and hard work at school by taking me to shop for clothes during some hard times my family had. Mr. Towery didn't think twice when he offered to buy me some clothes. Made a huge impact in my life till this day, he was a man who many admired and were thankful for. I was blessed to have him as my principal/friend/adviser. Mr. Towery I just want you to know that I admire you sir and hope one day to see you again, you will be missed greatly by not only myself but many many many others.

I knew George Towery since I was born, as he and his family lived across the street from us, and my Nana and Granddaddy lived beind the Towerys.  We were always cutting through his backyard to get to our grandparents' house, and he NEVER yelled at us or told us not to!  He and his wife, Dorann, were always kind to the neighborhood kids.  Many years later, I was an Instructional Assistant at Cameron Elementary for a short time while he was there, and I remember how awesome he was with the students, as well as the faculty/staff.  My heart and prayers are with Danny, Eddie, and Sarah.  May he be at peace with his beloved bride.

To The Family Of Mr. Towery May God Heal The Void That You Are Experiencing Now And That As The Days Passes That You Will Know That He Is With The One That Sits High But Looks Low.  Mr. Towery Was A Very Kind Gentle Man.  I Remembered When My Brother Passed Away He Asked My Mom Could He Speak At His Service.  Well Mr. Towery Had Us Laughing And Crying Because He Had Melvin Peg Down To A T. He Was An Awesome Principal And I Remember When He Was Retiring From Cameron Elementary School To See The Joy On His Face Of All The Children, Parents, Teachers, Faulty That He So Touched And Loved.  Mr. Towery Now It Is Time For You To Receive Your Wings For A Job Well Done. Thank You Sir!!!

George was like nobody I ever met before.  He changed so many lives with his dedication to area youth.  He was a giant for the Springfield community  where he lived and a legend for Cameron Elementary School and FCPS.  We can all look at George's life, and find more ways that we can give back to the community in his spirit.  RIP good friend, you made a big difference in so many lives, let us all never forget and strive to do our part.

As the newly appointed principal at Navy Elementary School back in 1989, George was one of the  principals who stopped by the school to congratulate and encourage me as the new leader,  He offered sage advice for success and self preservation.  

My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. George made remarkable, positive differences in the lives of his many students, families, friends, and colleagues.

To the Towery family, friends, former school mates, neighbors....How can you put into words what one single man meant to generations of people? George Towery came into my life 51 years ago. He was a positive influence and mentor for me, my children and my grandchildren. He and his family frequented the restaurant I worked at as a young adult and throughout my life he continued to be there when I needed him most and when I least expected.

There is a huge whole in the heart of Northern Virginia. God Speed Mr. T. We'll always love you.

Early in my life I learned from Mr. Towery,  my elementary school principal, the importance of inclusion, acceptance, and integrity. He was the epitome of a leader, with an open heart and ethics that he spread throughout his community. He knew every student's name, knew our parents, asked about our older siblings, greeted us daily and loved us, his extended family. I am truly heartbroken to learn he passed away and feel extraordinarily fortunate for the example that he set for our entire community.  What a wonderful man. We were all truly blessed to have him in our lives. I wish now that I would've told him how important he was to us, how his example contradicted all the negativity that we would  face in the world after we left elementary school.  Thank you Mr. Towery, you are loved and missed!!!

Mr. T was an incredible, wonderful principal. For the rest of my time in school, there was never another principal who measured up to him. When we were moving he gave us ducklings to take with us "to the country" and so we brought little pieces of home with us, gifts from our principal.

My deepest condolences to his family. His kindness and joy have left such deep imprints on so many, thank you for sharing him with us.

Though I have never taught in Fairfax schools, but do aspire to, Mr. Towery will always be remembered.  I met him through very dear friend of mine, Helen Sutton Peterson.  He allowed me to come to teach Touch Math to his faculty.  He was the best principal I have ever met because he was kind, caring, considerate, loving, listened, generous, supportive, and most of all, he thought outside the box. So he understood what it took to reach his students.  He took entire grade levels for overnight trips, who does that at the elementary level?  He took care of everyone at Cameron as though he was their father taking care of a family. He knew generations of each family at his school.  They even took care of farm animals at the school. He always invited and welcomed me to his events.  I remember going to a celebration for his faculty and staff, at his home, being full of joy and laughter.  I've never had a principal care like him.  He was heaven on earth for so many families.  As busy as he was, he found time to actually teach those who had challenges reading.  He was the epitome of a SUPER HERO PRINCIPAL, if there ever was one.  I thank GOD for letting me meet an ANGELIC SCHOOL LEADER during my lifetime, so that I know what to aspire to be like as  a principal, like George Towery. I truly admired and loved him. Mr Towery was so connected to the students and communities he served. I witnessed so many situations where he made things happen by putting students first, even if he got guff from higher ups later. As an administrator working with him to support compliance, he truly opened my eyes to a prioritization that worked from the student outward---to staff---to families---to his school community---then to the rule makers.  Many mandates don't seem to follow that path. We were creative and advocated for students' needs first. I loved it --- I was fortunate to be in his midst.

Principal Towery was so kind to me and my daughter during her years at Cameron Elementary.  He was a tireless leader, a gentle spirit and a fine gentleman.  He  jokingly once told me that he would live forever....and that he most certainly will.  Thank you Mr. T.

Thousands of children and their families, including all FCPS staff over many, many years were touched by the boundless care and compassion George exhibited each moment of every day. He was a Master Jedi and mentor and friend to each of us. Seems like we were "forever friends", actually! I am out of town and so cannot be at the services but I send my love and prayers to his family, friends and colleagues. Peace be with you. God's angels have surrounded George with their wings. He has become one of them. Of that I am certain.

My first job interview in FCPS in 1971 was with George Towery.  I didn't get the pleasure of working for him but did have contact with him over my 33 years in the county. I did know how much he cared for his schools, his staff, students & their families. 
Many will have wonderful memories of a man who was a credit to public education.

George Towery was a beloved Fairfax County principal.  He was a mentor to many of us, devoted to his entire school community and dedicated to his profession. He was always kind, compassionate and supportive of anyone in need. We will always remember how he "rescued" us from Blackwater Falls State Park when our motorhome broke down, helping us to arrange for a tow truck to get us off the mountain.  Like many, we were honored with his friendship.

Young or old, student or colleague, George always greeted everyone with a smile and made us feel special.  His actions and attitude made a positive difference for all.  He was such a wonderful role model and dedicated educator.  My deepest sympathy to his beloved family.  May he rest in peace.

No matter how much you think you know about public school leadership, there is that one leader who personifies what it means to be blessed to have the opportunity to serve.  George served the children above all else.  He was a quiet unassuming mentor and an unwavering  example of love for children.

Our children, David, Laura and Scott Kennelly attended Lorton Elementary School when George Towery was principal.  He knew every child's and parent's name, and greeted each child when they arrived each morning.  He started a roller skating club in the gym, and a rabbit club and goat club.  Our daughter Laura was the first goat club president.  One of our fondest memories of George was when the goats were giving birth.  We got a frantic phone call from George to come and help.  When we arrived, George was a mess.  Laura and another little girl from the club delivered the baby goats, and everyone was fine, except George!  He was a wonderful person, and he will always remain in our hearts.  The Kennelly family

George was a 6th grade teacher at Crestwood Elem when I met him. Previously he had been a FCPS bus driver.  Devoted to his students and friends.  Went on to become devoted husband, father, principal, friend and worshiper.  Sincere sympathy to the family.

Mr.Towery was the pillar of the Cameron Elementary School Community. He knew every child and parent by name. I had the honor of teaching at Cameron for eight years. He touched so many lives! My deepest sympathy and prayers to his family.

When I think back to my days at Grace, Mr. Towery is in all of my happy memories. He was so patient and kind and just emitted compassion. Sending light and love to his family.

George was my sixth grade teacher at Crestwood Elementary in 1966. We could not have had a more involved and dedicated mentor/teacher. He truly loved what he was doing.  We found him to be fun and engaging. We pulled a few pranks in the classroom and he laughed as hard we did. He was an amazing teacher. Later, when I became a sixth grade teacher and eventually an administrator, I tried to pattern myself using many of the traits George set forth in his teaching and time as an administrator. George, over the years remained the kind, caring, and involved man that I remembered from my youth. I live a couple of blocks from George. Over the years, as I was driving through the neighborhood, I would see him walking his dog. I would stop my car and we would engage in conversations about any and everything.  George has enriched my life and from reading the comments, so many others lives as well. I will miss you my friend.

George was one of those people who you know is special from the moment you meet them. He was kind and gentle. As a new principal I learned so much from him and was privileged to have him as a friend.  My deepest sympathy to his family, friends and the many who will miss him so much.  I am out of town and will miss his service, however, I will be thinking about this wonderful man.

George Towery was my son's Princioal at Lorton Elementary and he was the best in the world. I always say George loved every child. He loved the well behaved and he loved the ornery. He made them all feel they were important. My son David Roberts became a teacher because of him. He daid he,wanted to make kids fell like George made him feel.. George passed his loving heartt onto David, a special needs teachet in Rappahannock County. RIP as your love lives on in the kindness you lavashed on each student.

My condolences to The Towery Family.  I had the privilege of working with Mr. Towery at The Cameron Elementary School for several years.  He was an extraordinary educator, leader, mentor and friend who left a lasting impression on every one he can in contact with.  He will truly be missed.

It was my honor and privilege to have worked for George Towery for 7 years at Lorton Elementary.  From the first time I met him I felt like I was already part of his team.  With his warm personality, he made everyone feel welcomed and loved. He had a wonderful attitude on life. God Bless you George.  You will be missed.

I had the honor of working with George at Lorton Elementary School in the early 70's. What a pleasure it was! He will be deeply missed by all who came into his path.

George Towery was a wonderful leader and advocate for children.  He modeled for educators how to care for our children and their families.  If there was a student who needed a uniform shirt, George went to Walmart and bought him one.  If a family needed food, George made sure they had a way to get it. George will always be remembered as one of the great FCPS principals.

I had the honor of being Mr. Towery's administrative intern in 2004-05 at the beginning my journey as a school administrator.  I am grateful to Mr. Towery for mentoring me and teaching me the true meaning of school leadership.  Your compassion and love for others will carry on through the many lives that you touched. What an honor to know George Towery. In my fledgling career as an administrator in FCPS, a mention of his name showed how he was revered and admired by all. Loving his school community was foremost and he kept the children first. May God grant his family peace and give his soul eternal rest.

What an incredible leader.  Mr. Towery listened to the voices of the children, and because he did, that is how I began my career in FCPS.  Mr. Towery will always have a part of my heart.

A great mentor and friend.  I attended Lorton Elementary in the 70's and was in the Goat Club that Mr. Towery started.  Had the chance to speak to his Cameron young gentlemen's club about my service in the Navy.
