Elizabeth Mary Brinckman, a 93 years young, long-time resident of Springfield, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home on July 21, 2019. She was born on July 1, 1926, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. Her young life was greatly impacted by World War II as her brothers served overseas and their town endured nightly bombing which strengthened her English mettle and expectations “to just get on with it” whenever faced with challenges. She met her future husband, an American soldier, at the Town Hall, unaware that she had begun a love of a lifetime that would lead her to America where she became a wife, a mother, a US citizen, a grandmother and a great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Alice Jones; her brothers, Raymond Frederick Jones and Edward John Jones; her sister, Muriel Rosina Smith, all of England, and by her loving husband, Conrad Douglas Brinckman, her “Brinck”, a native of Alexandria, Virginia.
Known as “Betty” for her first 50 years, she was thereafter affectionately known as “Granny” following the birth of her first grandchild in 1976. In American, Granny Brinckman is survived by: daughter, Joy Alice Brinckman, of Springfield, Virginia; son, Douglas Edward Brinckman and his wife, Aline Savine Park Brinckman, of Blacksburg, Virginia; son, David Michael Brinckman, of Reston, Virginia; grandson, Jason Edward Brinckman, of Blacksburg; granddaughter, Anne Park Brinckman and her husband, Robin Patrick Halpern, of Blacksburg; grandson, Matthew Douglas Brinckman and his wife, Kristen Marie Scheller, of Charlottesville, Virginia; grandson, Kenneth Douglas Brinckman, of Charleston, South Carolina; grandson, Daniel Michael Brinckman, of Centreville, Virginia; granddaughter, Amy Lynn Brinckman, of Winchester, Virginia; great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Jayde Marullo, of Winchester; great-grandsons Dylan Douglas Halpern and Rowan Douglas Halpern, of Blacksburg, and her newest great-granddaughter, Willa Park Brinckman, of Charlottesville.
In England, Granny is survived by her cousin, Les Evans and his wife Pam of Oxfordshire and by her nephew Donald Samuel Smith, his wife April Smith, and their three sons, Daniel, Jason, and Craig, all of Gloucester, England. There are many more extended family members and close friends in England and America, all of whom Granny held close in her heart. A woman of high standards, personal integrity, and ability to persevere through difficult situations, she led by example, and she will be remembered and loved for her quiet, loving personality and warmth, and for how she made each of her friends and family members feel that they were special to her, because they were. Her sweet smile and kind voice, already missed, will not be forgotten, and memories of her will continue to brighten the lives of those who knew and loved her.
The other family members would like to recognize and publicly thank Granny’s daughter Joy for her decades of providing extraordinarily excellent, loving support and care at home for Granny, especially during the more recent years of Granny’s declining health; this unwavering devotion truly enriched Granny’s life.
