Bruce Joseph Kenefick, 69, died on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at his home in Springfield, Virginia, from the residual effects of two bouts of localized cancer, throat cancer in 1997 and lung cancer in 2008.
Born on January 25, 1944, Bruce was the first of seven children -- six boys and one girl --to Ruth Elizabeth Cocker Kenefick and Joseph Aloysius Kenefick at Old Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was two years old when his family moved to the Panama Canal Zone where his dad was a civilian Navy employee. The family returned to the U.S. in 1951, living first in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, then Washington, D.C., and later moving to Wheaton, Maryland where Bruce graduated from Wheaton High School in 1962. He attended Mackin High School for a time and, later, Montgomery County Community College and Northern Virginia Community College.
Bruce served four years in the Air Force, including a stint in Korea during the Pueblo crisis.
Bruce was a site planner who worked in developing large residential and commercial projects. His career spanned 40 years with leading Northern Virginia and Maryland civil engineering firms Dewberry & Davis (where he started as a draftsman), The Engineering Groupe, Bowman Consulting, Christopher Consultants, Ltd., Greenhorne & O'Mara, Rinker-Detwiler & Associates, Bengtson, DeBell & Elkin Ltd, and Long, Brown & Associates. He finished his career with Hish and Company in Reston, Virginia, retiring in 2010.
An inveterate motorcyclist, Bruce served as vice president of the Brothers in Christ Motorcycle Club. He was an avid baseball fan, fisherman, and golfer.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Rosemary Pavell (Paveglio) Rhew of the home in Springfield; brothers Gregory Patrick Kenefick (Mary Beth Richardson) of Annapolis, MD, Donald John Kenefick (Ann Hetrick) of Lancaster, VA, Kevin Aloysius Kenefick of Winchester, VA, Terrence Gerard Kenefick (Carol Sullivan) of Reedville, VA, George Joseph Kenefick (Alice Lane) of Mt. Airy, MD, sister Deirdre Jane Kenefick Sugrue (Tim Sugrue) of Mt. Airy, MD; stepdaughter Christine E. Rhew Thompson (Keith) of Mechanicsville, VA, stepson Craig P. Rhew of Springfield, VA; former wife Helen Victoria Mancuso Kenefick of Wheaton, Maryland; four granddaughters, and many nieces and nephews.
