Virginia was born in Mount Sterling on August 4, 1933, the daughter of Earl and Grace Williams Keith. She married John R. Gaffney on June 4, 1960, in Springfield. He preceded her in death on June 11, 2000.
Virginia was a graduate of Mt. Sterling High School and Western Illinois University. She was a teacher in the Palatine and Springfield Public School Districts. Virginia retired from the Internal Revenue Service where she served as a Taxpayer Service Representative. She was a member of the Springfield Civic Garden Club and the Illinois State Museum Society, as well as a volunteer at Lincoln’s New Salem. Virginia was of the Presbyterian faith.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Edwin E., George R., and Wesley L. Keith; and one sister, Yvonne (Donald) Kallenbach.
She is survived by one son, Kevin (Amy) Gaffney of Springfield; three daughters, Sara Gaffney of Chatham, Becky (Paul) Roman of Louisville, KY, and Michele Gaffney of Springfield; six grandchildren, Nicholas and Bailey Roman, Ashli Gaffney, Jack, Emily, and Tyler Gaffney; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at Boardman-Smith Funeral Home, 800 South Grand Ave West, Springfield.
Funeral Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at Boardman-Smith Funeral Home with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating.
Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to donor’s charity of choice.
