He was born on October 26, 1957, in Springfield, the son of George Edward and Carol White Payne.
Tom graduated from New Berlin High School in 1975 where he excelled in fencing and cross country. He started his career with the State of Illinois and went on to work for 35 years as a Senior Software Consultant with Levi, Ray & Shoup, Inc. (LRS). At LRS, Tom made a significant impact on the EOM Special Projects Team, assisting with worldwide, complex sales situations. His contributions were considered an invaluable part of the LRS family. Tom enthusiastically traveled the world representing LRS and took the opportunity to immerse himself in the culture of the countries he visited. Being very athletic by nature, Tom enjoyed being outdoors at the farm, and was a member of the Springfield Ski Club. He loved creating z-scale train layouts, cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals, and enjoying Port wine on special occasions. Tom was known as a funny, witty, social, diplomatic historian who was handy at woodworking and was an excellent trivia player.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Tom is survived by his companion of 37 years, Alice Christensen of Springfield; siblings, Joni Payne of Westlake, OH, Brian (Barbara) Payne of Springfield, and Sharon (Rick) Sonnemaker of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at Butler Funeral Home -Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.
Funeral Ceremony: 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at Butler Funeral Home - Springfield, with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating.
Burial will follow at Sulphur Springs Cemetery in Loami.
