Thomas attended Blessed Sacrament and Cathedral grade schools and Griffin High School in Springfield. He completed his undergraduate degree at Creighton University (1967) and went on to obtain his law degree from University of Missouri-Kansas City (1971).
In August of 1966, he married the love of his life, Joan Marie Webster. They were married for 58 years and built a family with three children and six grandchildren that he absolutely cherished.
He is survived by his wife Joanie; sons, Thomas Kelty, Jr. of Sarasota, Florida, and Travis Kelty (Heather) of Brentwood, Tennessee; daughter, Erin Selinger (Patrick) of Springfield; six grandchildren, Reilly Kelty, Seamus Kelty, Flanagan Kelty, Dublin Grace Kelty, Maggie Selinger and Molly Selinger; sister, Mary Jean Glisson; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends. Preceding him in death were his parents (Jim and Marian); and brothers (Jim and Bill).
Tom practiced law for nearly 50 years, primarily at Kelty Law Offices. In addition, he was involved in various business ventures including as co-founder of The Club Fitness Center and numerous real estate development ventures. His professional passion was focused on helping his clients and he was known as a formidable opponent in the courtroom. He was a member of the Illinois State Bar (1971) and Missouri State Bar (1985) Associations, American Bar Association (1971), Sangamon County Bar Association, and served as General Counsel for the Illinois Municipal League for 20 years. He was also a previous member of National Association of Bond Lawyers, National Institute of Municipal Law Officers, Institute for Local Government Law, International Municipal Lawyers Association, Illinois Development Council, and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. In addition, he served in various capacities over the years including as President of the University of Illinois-Springfield (SSU) Foundation (1982-1984) and a member of the board of directors of numerous organizations. Tom was also a recognized author of numerous legal publications including the Municipal Law in Illinois Handbook.
Tom loved life. He was dedicated to his Catholic faith and he was an ardent supporter of Sacred Heart-Griffin High School. There was nothing more important to him than spending quality time with his family. Over the years he was a youth sport coach and an avid golfer. He loved traveling, classic cars, animals, and watching sports. He was a previous member of Illini Country Club, Island Bay Yacht Club, Sangamo Club, Rotary International, and the American Business Club.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center, prior to ceremonies.
Memorial Gathering & Mass of Christian Burial: Family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Christ the King Church, 1930 Barberry Dr., Springfield. Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m., with Very Rev. Christopher House, celebrant. The family will host a Celebration of Life reception from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Papa Frank’s Italian Restaurant.
Private Inurnment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
