He was born July 28, 1926 in St. Louis, MO. the son of George and Drusilla Woods Burris. He married Barbara Sturdy, Apr. 6, 1950 in Kirkwood, MO.
Dr. Burris obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Washington University and his medical degree from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis. He completed his internship at St. Louis City Hospital and his surgery residency at Barnes/Jewish Hospital.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served his country during World War II.
In 1958 he joined the Springfield Clinic where he practiced surgery for 39 years. In the 1960's he was instrumental in pioneering Springfield's earliest open heart surgeries. He was a Clinical Professor of Surgery at SIU School School of Medicine.
Dr. Burris was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Sangamon County Medical Society, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the American College of Angiology, Central Baptist Church, Circus Fans of America, The International Brotherhood of Magicians( Co-Founder of the Springfield Chapter-Lincoln Ring), Springfield Historical Society, Springfield Art Association and was a member of the former Springfield Underwater Search and Rescue Team.
He is survvied by his devoted wife, Barbara;daughters, Jan(James)Knuckey of Springfield, OH. and Carol (Greg) Guetzko of Mt. Vernon,IA.; son, Dr. Robert (Lisa) Burris of Springfield; six grandchildren, Kim, Amy, Chip, Ali, Grace and Jane; a sister, Gwen(James) Pruyne of Bloomington and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call Sat. June 23, 2007 at Central Baptist Church from 9:30 AM until the time of memorials services there at 11:00AM with Rev. James Pruyne officiating.
