He was born on September 6, 1944 in Quincy, IL, the son of the late James and Kathryn (Waseleski) Cookson. He married Annabel Foley on March 17, 1967 in Quincy, IL.
Lou served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War era. He worked as a power plant engineer for the State of Illinois. He attended Springfield Bible Church, was a member of the American Legion, Post 32 in Springfield, and was an avid poker player and fisherman. He enjoyed the company of his Shar-Pei and loved to hunt mushrooms. Lou was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Illini fan.
He is survived by his wife Annabel Cookson of Springfield; 3 sons, Douglas Dane (wife Sherrie) Cookson of Springfield, Rodger Louis (wife Kellie) Cookson of Springfield, and Jason Turner Cookson of Springfield; 10 grandchildren, Ashley (husband John) DeLuca, Jaron (wife Rachael) Cookson, Dane Michael (wife Katherine) Cookson, Ryan (wife Stephanie) Cookson, Nicholas Cranwill, Cole (Significant other Mikayla Hamlin) Cookson, Menna Cookson, Emily Chandra, Tristin Cookson, and Isabella (Significant other Trent Mulligan) Cookson; 19 great-grandchildren; and 2 siblings, James (wife Libby) Cookson of St. Charles, MO, and Lessly (husband Greg) Sharpe of Quincy, IL.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd., Springfield, where memorial visitation will be held on Monday, April 22, 2024 from 10 am until time of the memorial service at 11:30 am. Inurnment will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield.
