Robert L. "Shug" McCurley, 90, passed away at 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at St. John's Hospice. Robert was born June 29, 1923 in Springfield, the son of James and Lela Westbrook McCurley. He married Annetta Rae Pendleton on December 12, 1942; she preceded him in death. Robert was a self-employed custom home builder. He proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps and was a POW. He attended Westside Christian Church and was a former member of the Springfield Motor Boat Club. Robert enjoyed building furniture, fishing, vegetable gardening, and was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lillian Hefron and Mary Sprague; and one brother, James McCurley. He is survived by his children, Barbara Hohimer of Springfield, Janet (husband, Gary) Book of Placentia, CA, Carol (husband, John) Bowen of Springfield; Robert E. "Shug" (wife, Ki) McCurley of Springfield, and Daniel (wife, Sue) McCurley of Lake Zurich, IL; eleven grandchildren, Lesa and Scott Hohimer, Tim Book, Amy Grable, Kari Borders, Ryan, Eric, Cory, Brad, Katie, and Kyle McCurley; eleven great-grandchildren; four siblings, Ralph (wife, Kathryn) McCurley of Rochester, Evelyn Moody of O'Fallon, IL, Doris Wetzel of Ft. Wayne, IN, and John "Jack" (wife, Lorrena) McCurley of Springfield; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home with Rev. Vaughn Beeman officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the United States Air Force.
