Robert W. Carmody, Sr., 83, of Springfield died at 2.45 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at his residence. Robert was born December 26, 1924 in Carrollton, the son of Phillip and Mary Catherine Carmody. They preceded him in death. He married Rosemary Dolan on August 6, 1955 in Pecatonica, IL. Robert was a graduate of Hardin High School's class of 1942, and was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1942 - 1945. He graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1950 and was a member of the SIU Alumni Association. He retired from Country Mutual Insurance Company after serving 38 years as a Regional Claims Manager. He was an avid reader and history enthusiast who appreciated classical, country, Irish and spritual music. He enjoyed traveling and sharing time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, spades and pinochle. He is survived by his wife: Rosemary Carmody of Springfield; three sons: Robert (wife, Rita) Carmody, Jr. of Jerseyville, Joseph Carmody of Baldwin, MO and Daniel (wife, Kari) Carmody of Kirkwood, MO; six daughters: Kathleen Goryl of Naperville, Mary (husband, Steve) Kunshek of Springfield, Tracy (husband, Zack) Church of Riverwood, Laura Carmody of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Molly (husband, Sean) Neary of Downer's Grove and Julia (husband, Brian) Wort of Pewakee, WI; eighteen grandchildren; five sisters; two brothers; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Family will receive friends from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 21, 2008 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Following visitation cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1930 Barberry Drive, Springfield with Rev. Richard L. Chiola celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the U.S. Navy.
