Richard A. (Dick) Washburn, 84, passed away at Memorial Medical Center on February 12, 2011. He was born in Kewanee, Illinois on January 1, 1927 the son of Robert G. and MaryAn (Anderson) Washburn. His parents and a brother-in-law, Gerald Hines preceded him in death.
He married Lois E. Hines of Peoria, Illinois in 1955. She survives with their four daughters, Jeanne (Ed) Decker of Springfield, Carol Washburn of Santa Fe, NM., Joyce (John) Dachauer of Normal, and Cathy (Larry) McGrath of Springfield. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Jeff Dachauer of Urbana, Jay Dachauer of Normal, and Connor and Carly McGrath of Springfield. Additional family survivors include Robert and Therese Hines of Springfield, Harold and Judy Motteler of Peoria and several nieces and cousins.
Dick served in the Navy from 1944-1946. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Bradly University in 1953.
During his career, Dick was a Sales Representative for Standard Oil, Burroughs Corporation and Standard Register, retiring in 1990. He thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years playing bridge, spending time with family, watching his grandchildren participate in sports and musical programs, traveling and having coffee with friends.
He was very active in the Shriners Retirees Club and First Congregational Church, and held a variety of leadership positions in both organizations. Dick didn't know a stranger and delighted in visiting with others. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday. February 15, 2011 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Bisch Funeral Home West 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd Springfield. Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 8:30 am at the First Congregational Church 2100 Bates Ave in Springfield with Pastor Dan Dexter officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Shriners Hospitals and the First Congregational Church.
