Raymond Lee Douglas (Skip), 71 departed this life on September 10, 2024 at his home in Springfield, Illinois. He was born on December 4, 1952 in Springfield, Illinois the son of Thelma P. Douglas and Rollin “Donnie” Barton.
Skip attended Springfield Public Schools and was a graduate of Lanphier High School where he was an outstanding athlete in Basketball, Football and Track. He was a member of the 1971 Basketball Team inducted into Lanphier High School Hall of Fame for finishing fourth in State of Illinois. After graduation, he was drafted to serve in the United States Army.
After serving in the military, he went on to play basketball at Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois. He later transferred to Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale, Illinois where he earned a degree. While attending SIU, Skip formed friendships and lifetime bonds with other young college men known as the “MEATPACKERS.”
Skip was employed with the State of Illinois for many years working for the Secretary of State and Central Management Services.
He was a great coach and mentor to many young men in both Springfield and Indianapolis communities. He enjoyed playing golf, handy work and was always up to a challenge of a good Bid Whist card game. Skip loved the Lord and was a long time member of Union Baptist Church.
Skip was preceded in death by his Parents, Sisters: Joanne Douglas, Donnita Barton-Davenport, and Ronda Barton-McAllister. Granddaughters: Amiya and Baily Douglas.
He leaves to cherish memories his Son: Ramacio D. (Tiffany) Douglas of Springfield. Grandchildren: Kewonne Douglas, Gabby Ware, Kamren Douglas, Taccorri Williams, Talaya Williams, Cameron Meyers, Ramacio Douglas Jr. and Lazayda Logan. Great Grandchildren: Amelia Douglas and Cory Rolland, Jr. Skip is also survived by Brothers: Clark (Jennie) Douglas, Sr. and Rollin “Buzzy” (Ovelia) Barton, II. Close Friends: Eric Moore and William ‘Billy” Crawford. Close Cousin: Butch Renfro. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, Springfield, Illinois. Services will be held at Union Baptist Church, 1405 E. Monroe Street, Springfield, IL on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Visitation starts at 9:00am and funeral service begin at 10:00am. Burial: Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, IL with military honors provided by the US Army and the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
