Phillip H. Schmidt, 82, of Springfield, passed away at 3:08 a.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at St. John's Hospital. Phil was born June 13, 1934 in Springfield, the son of Eric and Gladys Hart Schmidt. He married Susan Jayne Conavay Schmidt on November 27, 1957 at Clementine Memorial Presbyterian Church; she preceded him in death on April 23, 2008. Phil was a graduate of Lanphier High School, Class of 1952. He went on to attend the University of Michigan on a football scholarship, but became ill after a semester and was no longer able to play. Phil continued his studies at Western Illinois University before joining the United States Army where he served as one of the last occupying forces in Germany. Upon returning to the States, Phil and Susan were married. Phil returned to Western Illinois University where he later graduated. He went on to work as a teacher and later served as the Principal of Staley and Palmer Grade Schools. Phil received his master's degree from the University of Illinois. Phil was the Principal of Lanphier High School. Known as "Mr. Lanphier," Phil was the school's biggest supporter of its academic and athletic teams and student body. Phil could often be seen at extracurricular activities showing his Lion Pride sporting a bright orange cowboy hat and bright orange blazer. While working at Lanphier, he was recommended for and completed the Danforth Scholar School Improvement Institute at Harvard University. Phil retired as a Deputy Superintendent of Personnel with District 186. He was inducted into the Lanphier High School Hall of Fame in 1992. Phil enjoyed spending time with his family, especially driving to Las Vegas, NV. He enjoyed shooting dice and taking his family out to dinner and shows. Phil also loved to golf, but his greatest passion in life was his grandson, Johnny. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Paul Schmidt. He is survived by his son, John (Robin) Schmidt of Springfield; grandson, John Phillip Schmidt II of Springfield; one brother, Eric (Joanne) Schmidt of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th Street, Springfield. Graveside Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at Old Salem Cemetery, Springfield, with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating.
