Mary Eleanor was born in Springfield on October 2, 1942, the daughter of Louis Alexander and Angela Hayes Gietl.
Mary Eleanor graduated from Sacred Heart Academy. She then attended Springfield College and graduated from the University of Dayton where she earned her bachelor’s degree. Mary Eleanor started her career as an elementary school teacher before becoming CFO for Gietl Bros Inc. for over 30 years. She was a faithful parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church. In her free time, she was a PSR teacher and attended many Bible studies. She was also a member of the Springfield Garden Club and loved reading, gardening, and devoting much of her time to her faith.
Mary Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Maureen (Ricky) Marks of Waxhaw, NC; sons, Brian (Mitzi) Maloy of Springfield and Tim (Lisa) Maloy of Waxhaw, NC; siblings, Louis (Kathy) Gietl of Springfield, Maureen (Angelo) Guzzo, Virginia (Dennis) Bolbach, Madonna Fluckiger, Larry (Kathleen) Gietl, and Bernie (DL) Gietl; grandchildren, Emily, Sammy, Brady, Eleanor, Joseph, Cecelia, Agnes, and Zellie; niece, Angela (Mike) Christie; nephew, John (Trish) Fluckiger; and honorary grandchildren, Mary Katherine, John, Matthew, Thomas, Peter, and Grace.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother-in-law, Dr. Joe Fluckiger.
Funeral Mass for Mary Eleanor will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, November 3rd, 2023, at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1725 S Walnut St, Springfield, with Monsignor David Hoefler and Rev. Jeff Grant concelebrants. Family will receive friends for visitation from 10:00 until 11:15 a.m. prior to the funeral mass.
Private interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Parish.
