Mary was born on October 25, 1925 in Springfield, the daughter of Leslie G. and Amy H. Swett Pefferle. She married Truman L. Flatt, Jr. on June 27, 1947 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church; he preceded her in death.
Mary studied teaching, but ended up spending her life as a homemaker, raising her children, and being a hockey mom. She was a Gray Lady Volunteer at St. John’s Hospital and enjoyed visiting at the coffee klatch at St. Joseph’s Home. In her spare time, she would play bridge and spend time outside doing yard work.
She was also preceded in death by her son, David P. Flatt; grandson, George L. Busen; her parents; daughters-in-law, Christine and Tonna Flatt; sister, Patricia Sloan; and an infant brother, George Edward.
She is survived by her sons, Steve Flatt of Springfield, Chris (wife, Leigh) Flatt of Rochester, and Philip (wife, Becky) Flatt of Springfield; three daughters, Sally (husband, Riley) Flatt Lane of Springfield, Nancy (husband, Monte) Flatt Busen of FL, and Janet Flatt Cole of Springfield; fifteen grandchildren, Tasha Kuchar, Carla Vallone, Truman Flatt III, Thomas A. Bianco, Amy Trawick, Carrie Bassett, Jessica Golitko, Drew Flatt, Taylor Flatt, Mark Krueger, Kate Godbey, Kali Cole, Stephanie Fanale, Jon Flatt, and Nick Flatt; twenty great-grandchildren, Annaleigh Kuchar, Jade Niehaus, Bo Kuchar, Eli and Madison Trawick, Jack Bassett, Dominic and Meg Golitko, Anna Flatt, Sophia Fleishman Vallone, Ellegra Fleishman Vallone, Gage and Elle Godbey, Cecilia and Henry Fanale, Elizabeth Krueger, Vincent, Rozalia, Nico and Marco Bianco; and several cousins.
Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2020, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 South Walnut, Springfield with Rev. Msgr. David Hoefler, principal celebrant and Rev. Jeff Grant, concelebrant. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings and limiting attendance to 140 guests at one time. Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center following ceremonies.
Private family graveside ceremonies will be held.
