Born on November 2, 1954, Mark was the eldest son of Phyllis and Edward Weaver. After attending Springfield High School and Wheaton College, Mark attended medical school at Southern Illinois University, graduating in 1980. Mark was Chief Resident during his training and held a fellowship in nephrology at Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis. He had a 35-year career as a physician in Saint Louis and Springfield, most recently as a hospitalist at the Springfield Clinic. His depth of knowledge about medicine was profound, and nothing thrilled him more than making a rare diagnosis. Beyond medicine, Mark wrote the “Borefolio” stock picks column for The Motley Fool in the late 1990s. A lifelong fan of the Chicago White Sox and the Saint Louis Blues, Mark was also an avid golfer and fly-fisherman.
None of these facts capture why we will miss him. Mark was funny. He was good at the New York Times crossword and aced Jeopardy. When he saw the White Sox score on TV, he leapt out of his Comiskey Park chairs to do his special “pump” dance. He listened to audiobooks constantly and always had good book recommendations. He grilled a mean flank steak. He loved to travel, most recently on a train trip around the US and a cruise to Canada. He saw Mark Knopfler live countless times, slapping his knees all concert long. If Mark called you pal, you knew you were in trouble. He supported his kids unconditionally, even when they took paths different from his. He would like you to know that if vanilla were invented today, it would be the hot new flavor.
Mark is survived by his two children, Hannah and Alexander, his granddaughter Margot, his brother Kirk, his father Edward, his ex-wife and dear friend Cassandra, and his loving cousins. Those who knew Mark know that he hated to be the center of attention, and he did not want a memorial service. Any who wish to do so can share memories with Mark’s family at [email protected]. Donations in his memory can be made to the Central Illinois Foodbank (1937 E Cook St, Springfield, IL 62703) or the Nature Conservancy (preserve.nature.org).
