Margaret Catherine Victoria Lamont Hicks, “Meg”, died peacefully on Monday February 19, 2018 after a long illness. Meg was born on July 25, 1939 in Liverpool, England, the only daughter of George Alexander Lamont and his wife Dorothy (Hughes) Lamont. Meg graduated from The Gregg College, Liverpool and went to work as a typist/stenographer for the Mersey Docks and Harbor Board in the Liver Building on the Liverpool waterfront. In January 1960, Meg married David Vernon Hicks M.D. In September 1961, Meg, David and their infant daughter Suzanne immigrated to St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, sailing on the ship RMS Newfoundland. Their son Mark was born in 1963 and they lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia and again in St. John’s before immigrating to Springfield, Illinois in 1967. After her divorce, Meg worked for over 30 years as an international sales correspondent for Hobbs/Stewart Warner/Honeywell Corporation. She retired in 2006 but maintained her many work friendships around the world. Meg was a gourmet cook and baker, couture seamstress, English-style flower and vegetable gardener, self taught engineer of home remodeling projects, avid reader/watcher of British mystery books and TV series, daily jeopardy “player” and loved most of all, a good cup of hot English breakfast tea.
Meg is survived by daughter Suzanne Hicks Friedman, son Mark Hicks, son-in-law Arthur Friedman, daughter-in-law Adonay Hicks and grandchildren David Friedman, Mark Hicks and Ashlee Hicks. Meg is predeceased by her parents George and Dorothy Lamont and her brother Victor Lamont.
A private burial service will be held on Saturday March 3, 2018 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Houston, Texas. Bisch & Son Funeral Directors, Springfield, Illinois and Earthman Funeral Directors, Bellaire, Texas are in charge of arrangements.
